What We Do

Primary field research is a distinct professional discipline.

Primary field research (the direct collection of insights through structured conversations with physicians, payers, executives, and clinical specialists) is one of the highest-value activities in the life science intelligence ecosystem. It is also one of the least formally recognized.

For decades, the professionals who conduct this work have built careers through informal mentorship, on-the-job learning, and individual reputation. There has been no shared standard, no recognized credential, no community of practice.

APFR exists to change that. We define what excellent field research looks like, teach it systematically, and credential the professionals who do it.

The Certified Field Researcher designation is the only professional credential designed specifically for the qualitative interview practitioner. It covers the full scope of field research practice, from research design and source development to conversational interview methodology and professional ethics.

Membership

Who applies to become a member.

APFR membership is selective. We credential professionals whose background, experience, and professional conduct meet the standards the credential represents. Admission is by invitation, reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Experienced Practitioner
You have been conducting primary research interviews, formally or informally, for years. Your work is strong, but your credential is the company you came from. APFR formalizes what you already know and establishes your standing independent of any single employer.

The standards we hold ourselves to.

The APFR Code of Ethics is the foundation of the CFR credential. Every member commits to its principles as a condition of certification and annual renewal. The full Code is published and publicly available.

Research participants understand the nature, purpose, and use of the research before engaging. Consent is explicit and documented.
Accurate Representation
The researcher's identity, the research purpose, and the client relationship are represented truthfully in every interaction.
Data Integrity
Findings are reported as discovered. Characterizations reflect what sources communicated, not what clients prefer to hear.
Confidentiality
Source identities are protected. Client research questions and findings are held in strict confidence.
Regulatory Compliance
All research activities comply with applicable law, including regulations governing expert interviews in regulated industries.
Professional Boundaries
Field researchers operate within the defined scope of the research engagement and do not act on behalf of sources or clients beyond that scope.
